Chapter 10

“Leah?” I asked, and Eddie stopped to turn back to me. “The young girl from The Fox? She was out in the hills that night?”

“Yes,” Eddie replied, and he looked slightly confused. “Is that important? Oh, you don’t think she could have possibly had something to do with Billy, do you? Oh, dear, she’s only a girl. I’m sure it was nothing.”

Skye looked unsure, and I thought about how unhappy Murray had been to have us around. Maybe the pub owner knew something, and Leah could be the key to finding out just exactly how much he had kept from us.

Eddie led us up the path behind the hotel, which we had briefly wandered up with Declan the day before.

“So, what did Leah say?” Skye asked as we walked up the gentle incline. “Did she seem nervous when you ran into her?”

“Well,” Eddie said. “She did, now that you mention it, but I mean, we probably just gave her a fright. But she was very sympathetic when we told her about Snooker, and she was quite happy to help us dig.”

“And she was alone?” I asked. “Was she carrying anything?”

“She seemed to be by herself,” Eddie nodded. “I think she had a bag, but nothing unusual about that. She must have just been having a walk.”

I didn’t want to discuss my thoughts in front of Eddie, so we kept relatively quiet as we continued up the hill. Leah was a teenage girl, so it was very possible she had snuck out for a secret smoke or some other harmless activity. If so, then it was just an unlucky coincidence on her part, but we couldn’t ignore the fact that she had been near the scene of the murder that night.

“It’s not too much further,” Eddie said. “There’s a little ridge coming up, that’s the spot.”

“Okay,” I nodded. “Eddie, do you remember anything that Leah said when you saw her? Did she give any reason why she was out in the hills by herself?”

“I don’t believe she did,” Eddie said. “She just said she had gone for a walk and lost track of time. Although, she did ask us to not mention we had seen her. I think she would get in trouble if her parents found out she had been out too late on her own.”

I gave Skye a worried glance as we stopped at a small clearing which was just to the side of the path. You could see out onto the harbour, and there was a collection of bushes and wildflowers that created a little ring around a patch of ground. It was a beautiful view, and I noticed a little mound of dirt in the middle of the bushes.

“Here he is,” Eddie said as he wiped his eyes on his sleeve. “You’ll excuse me if I don’t want to look?”

“Of course, “I said gently, and I took the shovel from Skye. “I promise I’ll put him straight back, just as soon as we’ve checked.”

The old man nodded and blew his nose on a crumpled handkerchief as he wandered away from the clearing.
